How to Choose a Dehumidifier by Room Size and Capacity

Black spots creeping along the bedroom window frame, towels that never quite dry, a musty smell in the hallway cupboard. Damp is one of those problems that gets worse quietly, and the bestseller lists are full of dehumidifiers that look identical but perform very differently once you get them home.

This guide explains how to choose a dehumidifier by room size and capacity, which type suits a cold or warm house, and which specs on the listing actually matter. I have tested units in a damp ground floor flat for three winters, so the advice leans on what kept the windows dry rather than what the box promised.

Start with the problem, not the product

Before you choose a dehumidifier, buy a cheap digital hygrometer. They cost around 8 to 15 dollars and show relative humidity. Leave it in the worst room for three days and note the readings morning and evening.

  • Below 50 percent: you probably do not need a dehumidifier. Look for a cold spot or poor ventilation instead.
  • 50 to 60 percent: borderline. A small unit run a few hours a day may be enough.
  • Above 60 percent for long periods: mould starts to grow on cold surfaces. A proper compressor or desiccant unit is worth buying.

The aim for most homes is a steady 45 to 55 percent. Lower than that and the air feels dry, and you are paying for electricity you do not need.

How to choose a dehumidifier capacity for your room size

Capacity is listed as liters or pints of water extracted per day. The catch is that this figure is measured in test conditions, usually 30 degrees C and 80 percent humidity for the higher numbers, or 27 degrees C and 60 percent under some newer standards. Your house in winter is much cooler, so real extraction is lower.

SpaceTypical areaSuggested capacity
Single bedroom or small bathroomUp to 15 square meters10 to 12 liters per day
Living room or 1 bedroom flat15 to 50 square meters12 to 20 liters per day
2 to 3 bedroom house50 to 100 square meters20 to 25 liters per day
Basement or very damp houseAny size with visible mould25 liters per day or more

If you dry laundry indoors, go one step up. A full load of washing releases around 2 liters of water into the air as it dries.

Compressor or desiccant: the choice that matters most

This is the spec most bestseller listings bury, yet it decides how well the unit works in your home.

Compressor dehumidifiers

These work like a small fridge, pulling air over a cold coil so water condenses. They are efficient in warm rooms, typically drawing 150 to 300 watts. Below about 15 degrees C, extraction drops sharply and the coil can ice up. Good for heated homes, kitchens and warm bathrooms.

Desiccant dehumidifiers

These use a rotating wheel of absorbent material that is dried by a small heater. They keep working well in cold rooms, garages and unheated bedrooms, and they are quieter. They use more power, around 300 to 650 watts, but they also release a little warmth, which is welcome in a cold room.

A quick rule: if the room is usually below 15 degrees C in winter, choose desiccant. If it is heated to 18 degrees C or more, a compressor unit is cheaper to run.

Features worth paying for, and ones that are not

Most units in the 150 to 300 dollar range share a similar spec sheet. These are the details that separate them in daily use:

  • Tank size. A 2 liter tank in a damp room can fill twice a day. Look for at least 3 liters, or a continuous drain hose outlet if the unit will sit near a sink or floor drain.
  • Built in humidistat. Lets you set a target such as 50 percent so the unit switches off when the room is dry. Without one, it runs nonstop and wastes power.
  • Laundry mode. Useful if you dry clothes indoors. It runs at full fan speed for a set time.
  • Noise level. Under 40 decibels is comfortable for a bedroom at night. Many compressor units sit around 45 to 50 decibels on high.
  • Auto restart. Returns to its settings after a power cut, which matters if you leave it running while away.

Wifi apps, coloured mood lights and extra ionizer modes add cost and rarely change results. If a review praises the app more than the extraction, treat that as a warning sign.

Why the biggest capacity is not always the best buy

A common piece of advice is to buy the largest dehumidifier you can afford so it works faster. In my testing, that often backfires in small homes.

An oversized unit in a single bedroom drops humidity quickly, hits the humidistat target, and switches off, then repeats every 20 minutes. This short cycling is noisy, wears the compressor faster and does not dry deep damp in walls and furniture any better. A correctly sized unit running steadily at a lower fan speed tends to give more stable readings and lower bills.

Bigger units are also heavier, often 15 kilograms or more, which makes moving them between rooms a chore. Many people end up leaving them in one spot. Check the weight and the wheels before you order.

Reading bestseller reviews for dehumidifiers

Star ratings for dehumidifiers skew high in the first few weeks because almost any unit pulls visible water out of a damp room at first. The useful reviews are the ones written after a winter. Filter for reviews older than six months and look for mentions of tank leaks, failed float switches and fans that start rattling.

Our guide on reading a star rating distribution before you buy explains why a product with many 1 star reviews mixed into a high average can still be a risk. It also helps to remember that the best selling gadget is rarely the best one, and the same pattern applies here.

If you are also sorting out a damp bedroom, a breathable topper can help. See how to choose a mattress topper by firmness and material for options that do not trap moisture.

Frequently asked questions

What size dehumidifier do I need for a bedroom?

For a typical bedroom of 10 to 15 square meters, a 10 to 12 liter per day unit is usually enough. If the room is cold or you dry laundry in it, step up to around 16 liters or choose a desiccant model, which handles low temperatures better.

How much does it cost to run a dehumidifier?

A compressor unit drawing 200 watts for 8 hours a day uses about 1.6 kWh. At 30 cents per kWh, that is roughly 48 cents a day or about 15 dollars a month. Desiccant units can cost about twice as much to run.

Should a dehumidifier run all the time?

Not necessarily. With a built in humidistat set to 50 percent, the unit switches on and off as needed. Running it constantly without a humidistat wastes electricity and can make the air uncomfortably dry.
