How to Choose a Mattress Topper by Firmness and Material
Your mattress is too firm, too soft or starting to sag, and a new one costs 800 dollars or more. A topper looks like the cheap fix, but the bestseller lists are full of near identical rectangles with wildly different reviews.

Your mattress is too firm, too soft or starting to sag, and a new one costs 800 dollars or more. A topper looks like the cheap fix, but the bestseller lists are full of near identical rectangles with wildly different reviews. If you want to choose a mattress topper that actually changes how you sleep, you need to look past the photos and read four specs most listings bury.
I have tested and returned more toppers than I would like to admit. Here is what separates the ones that stay on the bed from the ones that end up in the closet.
First decide what problem the topper has to solve
A topper can change how a mattress feels. It cannot repair one. Before comparing products, be honest about which of these you are dealing with:
- Too firm. You wake with sore hips or shoulders, especially as a side sleeper. A softer, thicker topper is the right tool.
- Too soft. You feel your lower back sink. A firm latex or high density foam topper can help, but only if the mattress underneath is still flat.
- Sleeping hot. You need breathable materials more than any particular firmness.
- Sagging. If there is a visible dip deeper than about 1.5 inches, a topper will simply follow the dip. Save the money toward a new mattress.
Lay a broom handle across the bare mattress and measure the gap at its lowest point. That two minute test saves a lot of returns.
How to choose a mattress topper by material
Material decides feel, heat and lifespan more than any other spec. The main options on bestseller lists:
| Material | Feel | Heat | Typical lifespan | Common price, queen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memory foam | Slow sink, body hugging | Warm | 3 to 5 years | 60 to 180 dollars |
| Gel infused memory foam | Similar, slightly cooler at first | Warm to neutral | 3 to 5 years | 80 to 200 dollars |
| Latex | Buoyant, quick to bounce back | Cool | 8 to 12 years | 200 to 450 dollars |
| Polyfoam (convoluted or "egg crate") | Soft, thin, uneven | Neutral | 1 to 2 years | 25 to 60 dollars |
| Down or fiber fill | Plush, pillow-like | Neutral | 2 to 5 years with fluffing | 70 to 300 dollars |
| Wool | Light cushioning, firm | Cool, wicks moisture | 5 to 10 years | 200 to 500 dollars |
Latex costs the most upfront but often costs the least per year of use. Egg crate polyfoam looks cheap and usually is, flattening noticeably within a few months.
Thickness and density, the specs listings hide
Thickness
Two inches adjusts feel slightly. Three inches is where most people notice a real change. Four inches makes a firm mattress feel genuinely soft, but it can also make getting out of bed harder and fitted sheets shorter. If your sheets have 12 inch pockets and your mattress is already 11 inches tall, a 3 inch topper will pop the corners off every night. Check pocket depth before buying.
Density
For memory foam, density in pounds per cubic foot predicts durability better than any review score. Under 3 lb foam tends to develop body impressions within a year. Between 3 and 4 lb is a solid middle. Above 4 lb lasts longest but sleeps warmer. If a listing does not state density at all, assume it is on the low end. A real manufacturer proud of 4 lb foam will say so.
For latex, look for ILD, a firmness number. Roughly 14 to 19 is soft, 20 to 30 is medium, and above 30 is firm.
Why the softest topper is not always best for side sleepers
The usual advice says side sleepers should buy the softest, thickest memory foam they can find. It sounds logical: shoulders and hips need room to sink.
In practice, very soft 4 inch memory foam often lets the hips sink further than the shoulders, which twists the lower back. Many side sleepers who buy the softest option report waking with new back pain after the shoulder pain goes away. A 3 inch topper in medium soft, or a soft latex layer that pushes back, usually keeps the spine straighter. If you share a bed with a back sleeper, medium is also far more likely to suit you both.
Reading bestseller reviews for a topper
Topper reviews have a timing problem. Most are written within the first two weeks, which is exactly when foam is at its best and before body impressions form. Sort reviews by most recent and look for ones written after three months or more. Search the review text for "flat," "dip," "smell" and "hot."
Also check whether hundreds of reviews landed in the same short window. Our guide on what review count actually tells you explains how to read that pattern.
A few more checks before checkout:
- Certifications. CertiPUR-US for foam and OEKO-TEX or GOLS for latex and covers indicate testing for certain chemicals and emissions.
- Off-gassing. New memory foam often smells for 24 to 72 hours. Unbox it in a ventilated room and let it expand fully before judging.
- Cover. A removable, washable cover adds 15 to 30 dollars to the price and years to the topper's life.
- Return policy. Many sellers will not accept opened bedding. Look for at least a 30 night trial, and check who pays return shipping on a bulky box.
A quick buying checklist
- Measure any sag on the bare mattress. Over 1.5 inches, skip the topper.
- Pick the material by your main problem: firmness, heat or budget.
- Choose 3 inches unless you have a strong reason to go thinner or thicker.
- Confirm foam density of at least 3 lb or a stated latex ILD.
- Check sheet pocket depth against mattress plus topper height.
- Read reviews older than three months and confirm the return terms.
The same habits apply to other bulky purchases you cannot try in person. Our guide on how to choose an office chair online uses a similar checklist, and you can browse more buying guides for other categories.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mattress topper fix a sagging mattress?
Not really. A topper follows the shape of whatever is underneath, so a deep dip stays a dip. It can mask a very slight sag of under an inch, but anything deeper needs a new mattress or at least a firm foundation check.
Is a 2 inch or 3 inch mattress topper better?
For most people, 3 inches makes a noticeable difference in comfort while 2 inches is a subtle adjustment. Choose 2 inches if your mattress is close to right and you only want a little softness. Choose 3 inches if your mattress feels clearly too firm.
How long does a memory foam mattress topper last?
A good memory foam topper with a density of 3 lb or more usually lasts three to five years. Low density foam can flatten within a year. Rotating it head to foot every few months helps spread the wear evenly.
